A fair question when the number has five figures. In short, the public research says the businesses that got a return changed how the work gets done, and the ones that bought a tool and kept the old process around it mostly didn’t. Here are four findings, none of them mine, all linked.

• 52% vs 7%

  Canadian SMEs whose revenue grew by more than 10%: 52% of the digitally advanced, 7% of the digital latecomers. Revenue that fell or stayed flat: 4% of the advanced, 33% of the latecomers.

• 24%

  Canadian SMEs using generative AI are 24% more productive than the ones that aren’t, and only 30% of them use it at all. BDC puts the productivity still on the table at 38%, and the GDP behind it at $350 billion.

  Statistics Canada matched AI adopters against their own tax records. They are 16.8% more productive than non-adopters of the same industry, size and age, 10.2% once you allow for the fact that already-productive firms adopt first, and 5.1%, which is statistically insignificant, once you account for their other investments. Most of the gain came from those, not from the AI.

• 37%, then 6%

  Of the people surveyed, 80% say AI made them personally more productive, but only 37% say it has added anything to their organization’s operating profit, essentially unchanged in a year, and 6% credit it with 5% or more. Nearly three quarters of that 6% had fundamentally redesigned the work instead of adding AI to it, up from 55% the year before.

A run plan or care plan pays for the infrastructure your software runs on and my time looking after it, never for a licence to software you already own. The Advisor pays for advice, not hours. That’s the starting price. A busier or more complex system costs more to run, and we agree on the number in writing along with the build, so it never comes as a surprise.
• Never a percentageI’ll never take a cut of what you sell: no royalties, no share of transactions, no per-user fees on software you own. You pay to have it built, and to keep it running.
• What a plan excludesNot included: what you pay other companies. AI model and API keys, third-party licences and app subscriptions stay in your own accounts, at cost. I don’t mark them up. Run plans and website maintenance quote changes separately. Website managed care includes text and image changes on existing pages; new pages, layouts and features are quoted separately.
• Website plansChoose one: maintenance covers hosting, domain renewal and tested updates; managed care adds unlimited text and image changes on existing pages within 5 business days. The fees are not added together.
• Outside a tierAnything outside a tier gets its own written price before I build it, so it never turns up as a surprise on an invoice.
• Moving upMove from a fixed tier to the same service’s Custom tier within 90 days, and what you paid is credited.
• RushUnder 2 weeks: +25%, shown as its own line on the quote.
• PricesIn CAD, plus GST. Invoices are due within 30 days, and quotes are valid for 30 days.
